Lose Weight With Me For 2006
August 20th, 2008 by Go Weblog
“Fat Pig” , “Beached Whale!” I’m tired of it all. I’m too much of a coward to kill myself so I guess I must change and the first way I need to change is to say goodbye to my best friend of 40 years: Junk food. Yes, at 350 pounds I have reached my Epiphany! I need; no I WANT to lose weight! Before it kills me. I can just see my funeral with all of my best friends drawing straws to see who will NOT be my poll bearers! “Not me, got a bad back!” etc. It’s time. Now if anyone wants to join me(and I can’t believe anyone would WANT to join me) I will be writing a weekly article here to walk(ugh) through my triumphs and tragedies with you.
We WILL lose weight! I am tired of being a “Fat person”. The first assignment, since we don’t officially begin until next Monday(1/1/06) Is to write down all of the foods that are good for you that you like. Next you will write down all of the snack foods that have stopped you from losing weight before. Then you will write down all of the exercizes that you can still do, and all of the activities that you would like to do if you were able to. That should provide motivation enough for us to begin our journey together. Someone once wrote that no one knows more about dieting and exercize than fat people!
I agree with that so I won’t be instructing anyone about anything except what you probably already have read and heard. Besides I am no doctor(I don’t even play one on TV). I will just be here to share with all of you the struggle to survive without feeling like it is not worth it. You see it is about replacing what you have (food and some lack of self) with confidence and food. (Sounds weird but you notice you still have food) In my Bio I noted that God is one of my interests. Well from time to time i may use a reference from the Bible because I really can’t live without referencing His Word.
The devil gave Eve a choice a long time ago. He promised her a choice between good and evil. And to know the difference. But what it doesn’t say is that they already KNEW GOOD! They KNEW GOD! I am telling you that you know the difference, you know what to do, and now it is time to choose good. Choose to live and choose life. You don’t have to “give up’ or ‘deprive yourself” of anything that is good. The devil made some things “LOOK GOOD” I’m saying you know what to do and it is time. Now is the time to change your life for the better. You need to do it, and if you are reading this, you need to do it now.
Alan (Bud) Speaker is a complex, compassionate caring man who, at almost 50 years old (3/13/56) is by most people’s description either “heavy, fat, obese jocular, and in this holiday season, Santaesque.” He has been interested in reading and writing and words all of his life but has only started seriously writing since the turn of the century. (sounds longer than 5 years). His interests are God, self improvement, family, sports and creative writing, although not always in that order. Bud has written poetry, short stories, television dramas and short plays although only the poems have been published. Bud’s goal for this year is to lose weight and write about it. Also he wants to finish writing the one book he was meant to write about: Streetball in his hometown of Philadelphia.

The Benefits of Low Fat Diets
It has been studied and surmised for decades. Low fat diets, before the low carb craze, were seemingly the golden ticket to good health, a trim body, and boundless energy. But new studies are starting to cast doubt on this long standing paradigm, paving the way for a possible nutrition breakthrough.
The specific study that prompted the new questions was a government funded study with almost 20,000 mostly overweight postmenopausal women. The study closely monitored the women’s diets, radically changing their eating habits in order to subsequently lower their risk of cancer and heart disease.
What the researchers found was less than compelling evidence that low fat diets significantly altered the risk of heart disease and cancer as once hypothesized.
Some Importants Facts to Point Out About the Low Fat Diet Study
While the results of the studies admittedly were not stellar, scientists still acknowledge there were other factors in their study’s control group of overweight, postmenopausal women which may have negatively impacted the outcome of the studies.
For one, due to the women’s age, they were - in essence - trying to reverse years of bad eating which may have already caused irreparable damaging effects on their health. Although most of the control group on the low fat diet did initially lose a few pounds, most of them continued to retain too much weight.
However, the diet prescribed was not directly designed for weight loss, but instead put an emphasis on dietary fat reduction rather than calorie restriction. This fact kept the weight on most of the test subjects, and excess weight in itself is a high risk factor for most cancers and heart disease.
Important Final Note on Low Fat Diets
Research has still suggested that a balanced, low calorie diet, with a healthy dose of “good” fat is the best way to secure a future that is healthy and disease free. Not only that, but before you break open the Ho Ho’s and Twinkies, high fat diets are still considered one of the most dangerous, and people who eat a lot of fat consistently have shown up with a higher incidence of heart disease and cancer.
To find the best diet for your lifestyle, I recommend you take a look at the following three diet plans for the best healthy eating principles for longevity, health, disease prevention and energy. By the way, none of them are considered to be “low fat”, but rather they focus on keeping the fat in your diet limited only to heart healthy fats which actually aid the body in staying healthy rather than clog it up.

Who can forget that song from the 1980s about nobody walking in L.A? It turns out that far too many seemingly took it to heart. People just don’t walk that much these dayslet alone bicycle, swim or engage in other forms of movement that does a body good. America has become a car driving, desk riding, TV watching, video game playing, Internet surfing, elevator taking, fast food eating society. Is it any wonder that we are fighting a veritable epidemic of obesity, when pressing the buttons on the TV remote, clicking the mouse, and handing the fast food drive-thru clerk money is the extent of our “exercise.”
Researchers, again, have recently underscored the severity of the problem this lack of activity is posting to our nation’s collective health. According to an October 2005 press release issued by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ National Institutes of Health, a recent Framingham Heart Study shows that “we [Americans] could have an even more serious degree of overweight and obesity over the next few decades” and that “If the trend continues, our country will continue to face substantial health problems related to excess weight.” In response to these findings, National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute Director Elizabeth G. Nabel, M.D. boils it down to this: “taking simple steps to make sure that the overall the number of calories you consume do not exceed the amount you burn can play a major role in lowering your risk for many chronic conditions. How is this done? You guessed itexercise!
Even with the knowledge of study findings and other health news-making events, it seemingly goes in one ear and out the other. People continue on the same unhealthy track despite medical warnings about lack of activity. The study’s leading researcher and Boston University Medical Professor, Dr. Ramachandran Vasan, cited a litany of dramatic, life-altering conditions that can be experienced from lack of activity. Even with the threat of high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, cancer, and osteoarthritis, most of us still do not budge from the sofa unless we absolutely, positively have to.
For those who really do wish they were more active, it can, admittedly, be difficult to put that desire into action. In today’s fast paced society, many of us cannot find time to sit down as a family for dinner let alone get in the car and drive to and from the gym. Even with the best of intentions, many with home gym equipment end up using the devices as (very expensive) clothes racks. With enough stuff piled on it and shielding it from view, perhaps they don’t feel guilty when passing it by on the way from the couch to the refrigerator to bed.
Others who do have the time to get to the gym may feel intimidated by all of the strange equipment. Some feel uncomfortable next to the cute girl in spandex who looks like she doesn’t even belong at the gym, not to mention the beefy guy snarling in front of the mirror as his biceps appear poised to explode. And, while some can afford to hire a personal trainer, many must venture into this unfamiliar territory on their own. This can lead to ineffective workouts, a serial lack of motivation or, worse, injuries. Soon after any of these events, enthusiasm naturally drops and it’s just your credit or debit card that it’s getting a workout as the gym continues to charge - whether you show up or not.
On the upside (sort of), the spike in gasoline prices has got a few people moving a bit more. Recent news reports indicate more people riding their bicycles to work and, yes, even walking! So if medical advice is not enough motivation, maybe a dent in our collective pocketbooks is enough to get America on its feet.
At the end of the day, it’s all about making time for something you want - make that NEED - to do. Even a minimal amount of time and effort can make a real difference when compared to no body movement whatsoever. In this case, something is indeed better than nothing.
